Sergeant George Grier was missing from the 1 Oct 1916 and his widow did not receive official notification of his demise until December 1917. (Cumnock Chronicle)
She was Marion Grier (Reid) and was living at 38 Townfoot in 1917. They were married in Glasgow in 1915. (as George Greer). She was the girl next door at 40 Townfoot.
He was in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attached to the Royal Scots, Machine Gun Section.
His entry on CWGC has him as Sergeant James Greir and Cumnock War Memorial has him with the RSF.
Ancestry has him as James Greer born Barony, Glasgow.
He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial at the Somme as well as the Cumnock War Memorial.
