Skares is a small community in the parish of Cumnock. It sits on a plateau with views over the Ayrshire  countryside. The population was much higher in the past.  It had 3 miners' rows, 2 of which were still inhabited in the 1960s. The site is now covered over with a coniferous wood.  It had a station and a school.
